ACTIVITIES DEVELOPMENT SUMMARY
(CAN was
called Children's Community Care Network International until a volunteer
offered to fund help with our new name and logo. Then Care Africa
Network, CAN, was chosen as being more appropriate and it was accordingly the
name registered with the UK Charity Commission.)
1. Consultation
and development of the project concept in partnership with all concerned in
four African countries and beginning of identification of projects to research
with them (link to details).
2. Charity
development and registration with UK Charity Commission.
3. Initial
development of website.
4. Fundraising
events (see article 1, article
2, article 3, article
4, article 5, article 6).
5. Research of
innovative ideas and projects to benefit children in need in four
countries - Lesotho, Swaziland (now Esawatini), Kenya
and Uganda - one country researched each year for four years (example of a report of a research visit, example
of a letter
of thanks received}.
6. Consultations
with NGOs and CBOs (such as keyhole gardens).
7. Funding
small income-generating projects to enable care of children (see examples of projects
funded by CAN and feedback
on a funded project).
8. Advertising
the work of African organisations and volunteers and disseminating the need to
support community-development approaches in Africa (see article1, article 2, article3).
9. Development
of research information collected to form the CAN methods training course
presentation and course manual.
10. In response to
request to help traumatised children in Africa, the founder attended an
additional training in treatment of PTSD and another on teaching this method,
then volunteered for an organisation concerned in return for a licence to teach
this method to CAN extension workers in Africa.
11. Developed the CAN
training course for treatment of children suffering from PTSD with course
manual for use of participants in treating children.
12. Delivered these two
courses first to all government social workers and some NGOs in Lesotho and to
NGOs in Eswatini (then called Swaziland.)
13. Progressed to
delivering the two courses to final year social work students at National
University of Lesotho and then National University of Eswatini
with NGO members attending the courses to promote
plans for future liaison and joint project.
14. Capacitating and
handover of CAN methods course to the National Universities in Lesotho and Eswatini.
15. Further development
of website as a mode of transfer of course material.
16.
Development of plans for continued support of
the over 550 CAN extension workers trained in developing projects for children
in need in Africa and treatment of PTSD in children.
